Kitchener’s is a unique Suffolk charity overlooking the sea in south Lowestoft, currently offering hotel style holiday accommodation to British and Commonwealth ex-armed service men and woman; British ex-merchant service men and women; and more recently to British ex-emergency service men and women, and their spouses or partners, widows and widowers.

However, we know that there are many younger ex-service personnel with school age children. Those who have retired or been medically discharged after serving in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq (amongst many other places) who have families that would beneift from a seaside holiday but are excluded because our trust deed does not include children.

We would like to change this as it seems unfair. If we were permitted to include family members by the Charity Commission we could possibly set a minimum age limit for children because some aspects of the building might be unsuitable for younger children. In order to be able to change our deed we have to carry out a survey of current and potential guests.

At present the fees payable by ex-service guests can be kept lower than cost thanks to the donations and sponsorship received from several major service charities and we are delighted to acknowledge the support of:

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity (was known as Army Benevolent Fund)
Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund
Seafarers UK (was known as King George’s Fund for Sailors)
Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity

As yet we receive no support for our ex-emergency service guests and until we do their fees are charged at cost. Perhaps in the future….?

Kitchener’s is always looking for more volunteers and if you can offer your time to support us we would be very pleased to hear from you. The management committee meets one evening per month and there is quite a mix of members offering many different skills.

Virgin Money Giving handles donations on our behalf and if you pay UK tax they reclaim Gift Aided donations for us. If you would like to support us with a single one-off donation, with a regular monthly donation or by fund-raising on our behalf please click on the link below.
